High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may show natural abilities in creative, intellectual, physical and/or social-emotional domains. At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive. In addition to this, students in Year 5 have the opportunity to seek enrolment and are considered for entry to Aurora College on the basis of academic merit, which is determined by their performance in the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Opportunity Class lessons focus on Mathematics, Science and Technology.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Henty Public School, we recognise that high potential and gifted education (HPGE) is part of everyday learning. Many of our students show high potential, and we nurture these abilities to help them grow into confident, capable learners.
- Students identified as high potential or gifted in any one of the four domains are provided with a tailored specialised learning support plan designed to nurture and enhance each student’s unique talents and abilities. These comprehensive plans not only focus on academic excellence but also address environmental and intrapersonal factors related to each child's specific area of expertise. By integrating these elements, the plans create a holistic approach to learning that supports the whole child. Furthermore, these specialised learning support plans are reviewed regularly and cyclically, ensuring that high expectations are maintained and optimal personal and academic growth is consistently promoted.
- Our teachers identify each student’s learning needs and use evidence based teaching practices to provide challenge, extension and enrichment. We offer learning opportunities that encourage students to explore their interests, think deeply and strive for excellence.
- Our supportive classrooms promote a strong sense of belonging and encourage creativity, collaboration and the confidence to take on new challenges.
- Flexible groupings, student leadership opportunities and strengths-based feedback help every learner set goals and reflect on their growth.
- Our teachers are committed to ongoing professional learning to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with high potential and gifted abilities.
Students are encouraged to deepen their strengths through a wide range of activities, including debating, public speaking, our Lunch and Learn Program and an abundance of sporting opportunities and competitions.
- We proudly celebrate talent through school assemblies and special events such as Henty Public School’s Rising Stars, the Splash Spectacular and our assembly class showcases held twice per term. These celebrations allow students from every class to share their achievements and showcase work they are proud of with the school and wider community.
- Leadership is fostered through school and sports captaincy, Aboriginal leadership roles, and our strong focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) reward days that highlight wellbeing and personal growth. Our Year 6 students take on the important role of being buddies for our Kindergarten students, helping them settle into school life with confidence and care.
- Daily life at Henty Public School invites curiosity, creativity and belonging, with opportunities to participate in clubs such as singing and drama. Sport also plays a central role, with students engaging in PSSA competitions, training and coaching, athletics and swimming carnivals, cross country and house competitions that build teamwork and school spirit.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
- Students participate in opportunities such as Premier’s Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, Premier's Reading Challenge, Premier's Sporting Challenge and the Premier's Debating Challenge.
- Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
